Meadow View to Wytheville, VA
75 miles
I don't know if you can see it in this picture but the constant sun exposure has turned about half the hairs on my arms and thighs blonde. My hands also have quite the cyclists tan. There are also three tan stripes on my forehead where my helmet vents are located.
Just outside Meadowview I decided to play with the panorama function of my camera. Below is the result.
About 15 miles out I came across the town of Damascus. It was a big hub for casual mountain bikers. It was along the Virginia Creeper Bike Trail and there were two bike rental places that hauled people and bikes up the mountain so that they could ride down the gravel trail. There was also access to the Appalacian hiking trail. I rode on the bike trail for a mile until it deviated away from the road. Over the next 15 miles or so the road climbed 1800 ft and I must have had 50 or so vans pass me, each dragging a trailer with about a dozen bikes on it.
The gradual climb out of Damascus towards Konnarock:
I had originally planned to stay at a campground near Rural Retreat but ended up going all the way to Wytheville since it was not much further and since the Rural Retreat campground was a couple of miles off route.
It was still relatively early in the day and I stopped at a laundromat on the way into town and also made stops at Walmart and Subway before heading to the city park for the night.
Wytheville:
While setting up in the park I was puzzled by the fact that there were about 30 people wandering around a relatively small park while staring at their phones. After a while I found out that they were all there playing some sort of Pokemon game that has apparently become wildly popular since I started my trip. It wasn't until around midnight that all the pokemon players were gone.
The park was otherwise very nice. The photo below doesn't really do it justice.
