Day 49, July 15

Axtel Campground at Rough River Dam to Sonora, KY
44 miles

Today I decided to make it a short day, mostly because there were few camping options in the next 100 or so miles. I had a choice of doing 44 miles to Sonora or close to 90 to Lorette. After the rains of yesterday I wasn't really excited about the idea of a nearly 90 mile ride.

It wasn't until around 9:30 that I finally headed out onto the road. I took my time in the morning and let everything dry thoroughly in the sun before packing up.

Below is the only picture I took while out on the road.

Kentucky is much more attractive than I expected and this view is typical of the more open areas.

When I reached Sonora I found that the camping options were not very attractive; I could either go 5.4 miles off route to a campground or march on to Lorette. Instead I did neither and checked in at Thurman Phillips Guest Home for a much more pampered night than usual.

It was a very nice place and was similar to a bed and breakfast.  For only $75 for the night I got a room with a private bath, two beers, a dinner (leftovers from a shrimp cookout they were holding for a large group), breakfast and my laundry done.

Pictures of the place appear below. The house was built in 1897 and had been passed down through four generations of the same family. At one point it sat vacant for 35 years until one of the family members decided to refurbish it.

After soaking in the tub I spent most of the late afternoon in the sunroom eating dinner and updating this blog.
