Hindman, KY to Breaks Interstate Park, VA
74 miles
Thankfully the weather is starting to cool a bit. This morning was the first time in a long time that I have seen fog. It still got hot and humid by afternoon but not quite as bad as it has been.
I passed through numerous small towns today: Mallie, Pippa Passes, Dema, Devinsville, Bypro, Melvin, Lookout, Hellier, Ashcamp and Elkhorn City (which was the largest at about 1000 people). I think the picture below was taken around Pippa Passes.
There was a series of four nasty hills along the way. Two 1000 foot climbs were sandwiched between two 800 ft climbs. Those sound like baby climbs but they were all very steep and I had to deal with the last two in the afternoon when it was hot and humid. The third one left my shirt completely drenched with sweat and was the toughest. The shot below is from the top of one of the first two climbs.
Much of the route followed a river and the folks that lived along it all had small bridges as part of their driveways.
Another bunrt building near one of the towns:
After stopping for a late lunch at a pizza and sandwhich place in Elkhorn which had wifi I headed on towards the VA border and Breaks Interstate Park. It is only one of two parks in the U.S. which is shared by two states. It is billed as "the Grand Canyon of the south."
Rest area on the western edge of the park:
A bit up the road I found the grave of an unknown confederate soldier:
VA border. Woohoo. Only one state to go.
