Day 38, July 4

Eureka to Chanute, KS
66 miles (includes 5 mi. in town)

Below is a picture of the Kansas version of a high mountain pass. I was probably a whole 300 ft above the valley below! At least I am finally getting something resembling hills.

Coming down from that immensely high peak I spotted the old guy in the picture below sitting on the center stripe of the road, seemingly too scared to move in either direction.  During a clearing in traffic I grabbed him and moved him to the shoulder, where he immediately started moving....nowhere.  He was clearly alive but I suspect he was not in the best of health.

Toronto, KS:

The lake below is part of Cross Timbers State Park.  It was a beautiful but very humid area.

Coyville welcome sign and history lesson:

In addition to the rolling hills I am also starting to see more lush vegetation.

City park in Chanute:

Chanute is a sizeable town and I spent some time exploring it. I got into town early; maybe 3 in the afternoon. Since this was the 4th I decided not to try to get to the next town.  I wanted to be off the road before the drinking started and also saw Chanute as the best chance around for a good fireworks show.

Downtown Chanute:

Love Shack, baby, love shack:

Chanute Sears:

Oddly named streets:

I camped in the city park, which gave me a great view of the town fireworks display. It ended up being the first night in a while without any rain and I was finally able to get my tent and other gear completely dry.
