72 miles
Last night I was awaken by a bunch of rustling noise in my campsite. I was pretty tired and it took me a minute or so to realize that someone or something was messing around with the rain covers on my panniers. I shined my light in that direction and saw a racoon clawing away. After chasing it off I found that it had gnawed a small hole through which it had managed to pull out most of my loaf of bread and the ends of two bananas. I ended up bringing the pannier in the tent with me but tossed the remains of the bread and bananas outside. They were gone by the morning.
I took very few pictures today. Illinois is just not that visually exciting. The picture below is of Little Grassy Lake, which I passed about 20 miles into my ride.
One thing I have discovered is that almost every public amenity seems to be broken here. I tracked down about half a dozen water fountains and spigots in the campground yesterday and not one worked. Similarly, neither sink in the men's room had a working faucet. I assumed it was just the campground but ended up finding that neither of the water fountains at the entrance to Tunnel Hill State Trail, which I visited later in the day, worked either.
Around noon I took a break for an hour or so in the park in Goreville to wait out some rain and lighting before heading off to Eddyville, where I am spending the night in a campground about a mile from town.
