Day 40, July 6

Pittsburg, KS to Golden City, MO

There were thunderstorms overnight and I took my time getting up and packing everything up.  Having some time on my hands allowed me to dry everything out in the sun before packing it away.  After that I spent the morning running some errands.  I got a haircut, shipped some cold weather gear home, picked up some cash and had brunch.

By 1:30 I was sitting in a waiting area in the bike shop waiting for them to finish up my wheel.  All of the spokes were in and the tech was working on tensioning all the spokes and truing the wheel. Unfortunately, any time someone walked in he had to stop to help them. Building a bicycle wheel is not a quick process and there is quite a bit of art involved. Since I had little else to do I spent most of the afternoon hanging around the bike shop.

Pittsburg is a nice town.  I have probably put on 10 miles just running around town getting my errands done and have explored quite a bit of it.

I finally got out on the road with my new rear wheel at 5:30 P.M..  Since that left me over three hours of light I headed off toward Golden City, MO, which was 34 miles away.

Some pictures from the day appear below.

This is a caterpillar that I happened to notice making its way up a string into a tree in the morning. It took about 10 minutes and the whole time it was just a tasty morsel, hanging mid-air, waiting for some bird to snap it up but it made it

The bike shop owner, George, had been a professional bike racer in the 1990s. At one event he met Greg Lemond and ended up with a signed yellow jersey from the Tour de France.  Lemond was an American, three time winner of the tour. Unfortunately everyone remembers the other guy (who did it by doping).
