Day 37, July 3

Harvey County East Park to Eureka, KS
65 miles

I took very few pictures this day since the terrain was pretty boring.  The weather was cloudy again with a few drizzles here and there and fairly light wind.

There was about 40 miles of straight road with gently rolling hills before I hit the small town of Cassoday. I can now say that I have been in the Prairie Chicken capital of the world.

I was hoping to get lunch at the cafe there but businesses in little towns like these are almost all closed on the weekends and the cafe in Cassoday was no exception.  Luckily for me there was a biker (motorcycle) rally just wrapping up and a couple that was packing up one of the booths saw me roll in and asked me if I wanted a free plate of biscuits and gravy. Another biker also gave me fresh ice water for all of my water bottles. After the free meal I headed off to tackle the remaining miles to Eureka.

Somewhere between there and Eureka I stopped along the side of the road for a minute and these gals below all became very interested in me. They were all spread out in an area 25 to 100 ft back from the fence but as soon as I stopped they all walked over and clustered together near me. They were obviously expecting food or something.

Between Cassoday and Eureka I also passed through the town of Rosalia but didn't stop since there was nothing open there.

As I was entering Eureka I met a cyclist from Sweden who was also riding the Transamerica Trail west to east. It was the first of about half a dozen times we would run into each other.

While I was setting up my tent in the park Jimmy and Jeff, who I previously camped with in both Dighton and Larned, showed up. They ended up staying in a house that a woman in town offers free nights in for cyclists.  I decided to stick it out in the park and was treated to a fireworks show that went on until about 1 A.M..  The residents had an impressive amount and variety of fireworks and were apparently ready for the 4th a day early.
