Day 28, June 24

Kremmling to Heaton Campground, between Dillon and Frisco, CO
44 miles

This was an intentionally short day to allow a little extra time to acclimate to high altitude.  Frisco is around 9,200 ft. Tomorrow I will be crossing Hoosier Pass (11,500 ft).

Riding out of Kremmling I turned onto highway 9 and almost immediately ran into an active construction zone. They were letting traffic through one direction at a time and I had to wait about 20 minutes.  There was over 6 miles of bumpy, pot holed dirt road and it was all uphill. The first 3 miles were also jammed with heavy construction equipment. The 6 miles felt more like 25. The photo below was taken as I came out of that stretch and does not really do it justice.

Just after the construction zone I was supposed to take a right hand turn and go around Green Mountain Reservior on the southern side, through the town of Heeney, but I missed the turn off and took the much busier road on the other side of the reservior. There were quite a few ups and downs for a road following a shoreline.  The pictures below were both taken around there.

From there it was a gradual climb, with the wind at my back, to the towns of Silverthorne and Dillon, where I had lunch and picked up some supplies. Leaving Dillon I followed the most beautiful bike trail I have ever ridden. My campground for the night was just off of it.
