Day 21, June 17

Colter Bay to Dubois, Wy
76 miles

Almost the entire focus for this day was getting over Togtowee Pass (an approximate 20 mile climb to around 9500 ft).

Somewhere near Moran

A pond about 1/4 of the way up

How about on?

Hard to read but it says "bears on road". About 1 mile past this sign a brown bear wandered out into the road about 300 ft in front of me and I came to a dead stop. I was not quick enough to get a picture of it. Thankfully it paid me no mind and I continued on about a minute after it crossed the road.

Around here I stopped for lunch at Togtowee lodge and had fried pickles and a Cuban sandwich, which left me a bit bloated for the rest of the climb.

Getting closer

Continental Divide and Top of Togtowee Pass

Lake at the summit

"The Hack"; a historical marker on the way down the backside.

Just outside Dubois

Downtown Dubois

The frequent temperature changes this day were almost as much of a challenge as the climb and I was constantly changing how many layers I had on. When I woke up in Colter Bay the temperature was in the mid 30s. By the middle of the climb it was in the mid 60s but quickly dropped into the low 40s near the summit.  By the time I got into Dubois, several thousand feet lower, it was pushing 80 degrees.

  1. What amazing views. 9500 feet sounds like quite a climb! Hope you felt fine at that altitude.
